Every year in December Toronto’s NOW magazine does their Green gift shop: the sustainable toy guide. It’s a survey of toys both good and bad, judged on their environments impact and educational value. We have only just learned that Family Pastimes Games were awarded NOW’s highest rating and their Ecoholics Pick Award in their last Xmas gift guide.

Here’s what they had to say:

FAMILY PASTIMES BOARD GAME
A Beautiful Place 2 to 4 Players, Ages 4 to 7 Click for a larger image An ecology game for children! Planet Earth can be a beautiful place, shared by all. Sadly, it has been harmed and made ugly in lots of ways. Players work together to restore the beauty. Can they do it before the dark pollution clouds encircle the beautiful place? They have a much better chance if they work together. Environmental concepts are presented in a simple way. Or, just play it as an exciting nature game. Includes: 12 x 12" board, pollution clouds, ugly puzzle, good ecology deed tokens, movers, die. © 1981 Our customers say: "This has become a real favourite in my classroom." — Winnipeg, Man.A family that plays together stays together – for a good half-hour anyway. I recommend putting the Monopoly and Hungry Hungry Hippo aside to try a different kind of board game. Perth, Ontario’s, Family Pastimes makes cooperative board games using 100 per cent recycled cardboard, water-based glues, non-toxic paints and soy-based inks. They make games for a range of ages, including this one on restoring the earth, complete with pollution clouds. $15-$35. Available at 100 Mile Child, Grassroots and familypastimes.com.
